Below you can find a description of the difficulty levels we have defined to classify the descents we offer. For this, the following parameters have been taken into account:
DIFFICULTY OF THE DESCENT: it is the technical difficulty of the descent, for this we base ourselves on sports graduation using a scale proposed for international use (canyoning grading system).
COMPLEXITY OF THE GUIDING SERVICE: when dealing with guided activities, the type of maneuvers and techniques that the guides have to use to manage security are also taken into account.
AUTONOMY REQUIRED FROM THE PARTICIPANT: as the difficulty of a descent increases, especially in those with a very aquatic nature, there may be situations in which the participants must have some experience or knowledge to face some sections with relative autonomy. This aspect becomes relevant in descents of level 4 or higher.
COMMITMENT OF THE CANYON: the commitment in a descent is determined by the possibilities to leave the riverbed or take refuge in the event of an accident or emergency.
GUIDE / PARTICIPANTS RATIO: the choice of the ratio is directly related to the morphology of the canyon, and has a decisive influence on the safety and quality of the service.
LEVEL 1 – Initiation/Families
The descents of this level suppose experiences of little difficulty in which the environmental dimension and the contact with Nature clearly predominate. These are especially suitable canyons both to enjoy with the family with young children (8 to 12 years old), and for those seeking a first contact with canyoning in a calm way and without major shocks.
- DIFFICULTY: Low
- COMMITMENT: Non-existing or very low.
- AUTONOMY REQUIRED FROM THE PARTICIPANT: Very low. Walking and swimming.
- RATIO: 1 guide per 8 participants.
LEVEL 2 – Initiation
This is the most common level to start in canyoning, it is not necessary to have experience and it is about descents that normally contain all the elements that make up this type of experience (emotion, adventure, challenge, contact with Nature …).
- DIFFICULTY: Low
- COMMITMENT: Very low.
- AUTONOMY REQUIRED FROM THE PARTICIPANT: Very low. Walking and swimming.
- RATIO: 1 guide per 8 participants.
LEVEL 3 – Initiation Plus
The descents of this level present the same type of difficulties as those of initiation but with a little more intensity, it is possible to carry them out with inexperienced participants whenever they seek a first contact with a good dose of emotion and adventure.
- DIFFICULTY: Medium.
- COMMITMENT: Low.
- AUTONOMY REQUIRED FROM THE PARTICIPANT: Low. Walking, swimming, good physical shape and some resistance to fatigue.
- RATIO: 1 guide per 6 participants.
LEVEL 4 – Intermediate
The intermediate level descents are intended for people with experience in initiation ravines who are looking for greater difficulties and intensity. These are mountain experiences in which there is already a certain commitment and require greater autonomy from the participants; due to its size, length and complexity of the abseiling lines, existence of forced jumps, and / or strong flows.
- DIFFICULTY: Medium.
- COMMITMENT: Medium.
- AUTONOMY REQUIRED FROM THE PARTICIPANT: Medium. Walking, swimming, good physical shape, fatigue resistance, good abseiling technique.
- RATIO: 1 guide per 4 participants.
LEVEL 5 – Intermediate Plus
Level intended for participants with experience in intermediate difficulty descents (level 4). They require an important degree of autonomy since the complexity of the abseiling lines can prevent the use of the safety rope, and there may be sections of white water in which a very good swimming technique is required or the execution of forced jumps of a certain difficulty.
- DIFFICULTY: Medium.
- COMMITMENT: High.
- AUTONOMY REQUIRED FROM THE PARTICIPANT: High. Walking, swimming, physical fitness, resistance to fatigue, good abseiling technique, and good swimming and jumping technique.
- RATIO: 1 guide per 4 participants.
LEVEL 6 – Verticals
This level encompasses descents of large waterfalls with long abseiling lines, without these involving great difficulties or preventing the use of the safety rope (easy llines, grouping in comfortable meetings, low flow or lack of water …). It is essential to have experience in level 3 descents (Initiation Plus), a good abseiling technique, and habit at heights.
- DIFFICULTY: Medium.
- COMMITMENT: Medium.
- AUTONOMY REQUIRED FROM THE PARTICIPANT: Medium. Walking, swim, good physical shape, fatigue resistance, good abseiling technique, and habit at heights.
- RATIO: 1 guide per 3 participants.
LEVEL 7 – Verticals Plus
These are descents with large waterfalls in which the line presents some difficulty, the meetings are meager, the flow is important, and / or the use of the safety rope is not possible. It is essential to have experience in level 4 descents (Intermediate), a very good abseiling technique, and habit at heights.
- DIFFICULTY: High.
- COMMITMENT: High.
- AUTONOMY REQUIRED FROM THE PARTICIPANT: High. Walking, swim, good physical shape, fatigue resistance, very good abseiling technique, and habit at heights.
- RATIO: 1 guide per 3 participants.
LEVEL 8 – Expert
Very large and difficult canyons, which require excellent technique and great autonomy, in addition to the acceptance of a high degree of commitment. The figure of the guide focuses mainly on driving and carrying out the necessary installations and maneuvers, and much of the progression has to be carried out in a self-sufficient way.
- DIFFICULTY: High / very high.
- COMMITMENT: High.
- AUTONOMY REQUIRED FROM THE PARTICIPANT: High. Walking, swimming, very good physical shape, a lot of resistance to fatigue, excellent abseiling technique, very good swimming and jumping technique, and habit at heights.
- RATIO: 1 guide per 3 participants.
